Students United Scholarships

Scholarships

Below are descriptions for all of our scholarships, including the award amount and criteria for each.

Timothy J. Penny State & Federal Public Service Fellowship

Scholarship Amount: $2,500 [State] /$5,000 [Federal]

Criteria:

  • Any Minnesota State undergraduate or graduate student (university or college) interested in a public service internship is eligible for Fellowship candidacy.

  • Internship may not be already underway at the application deadline.

Barbara J. Penny Community Service Scholarship

Scholarship Amount: $1,500

Criteria:

  • Any Minnesota State undergraduate or graduate student who is committed to community service is eligible.

  • Students must have completed at least one semester at a Minnesota State college or university.

The Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship Program

Scholarship Amount: Full-time scholarship recipients can be awarded up to $2,500, and part-time scholarship recipients can be awarded up to $1,200.

This scholarship application is due on June 1 and reviewed by the independent Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship Program Board.

Criteria:

  • Must be enrolled in a Minnesota State College or University

  • Must be a union member or the child, grandchild, or spouse of a union member

  • Must be a person of color

  • Must meet academic standards of the institution of current attendance.

  • Must have a 2.0 GPA for undergraduate applicants or a 3.0 GPA for graduate applicants.

  • Full-time student (12 credits undergraduate student, 6 credits graduate student)

  • Part-time student (6-11 credits undergraduate student, 1-5 credits graduate student)

  • Scholarship recipients can apply for renewal for up to two years at the college level and for up to four years at the university level or two years for graduate work. Renewals are not guaranteed.

Jared P. Stene Student Leadership Scholarship

Scholarship Amount: $2,000

Criteria:

  • Any Minnesota State undergraduate student who has completed at least 24 credits by the end of the current academic year.

  • Plan to register for a minimum of 12 credits per semester at a Minnesota State University for the upcoming academic year.

Friends Scholarship
Scholarship Amount: $500

Criteria:

  • A junior or senior at a Minnesota State University, having completed at least two academic years (30 semester credits).

  • Exhibit a special or unique financial need that would prohibit continuing their education.

Elizabeth Pegues Scholarship Matching Program for Students of Color

Scholarship Amount: Matching up to $1,000

Criteria:

  • A student of color.

  • A Minnesota resident and graduated from a Minnesota high school or any Minnesota community or technical college.

  • Unconditionally accepted at one of the seven Minnesota State Universities.

  • Have received a scholarship from a Minnesota-based civic, religious, fraternal, social or nonprofit youth-serving organization.

Hull Educational Foundation Scholarship

Scholarship Amount: $2,000 – $4,000 per semester

Criteria:

  • Attending a Minnesota State University.

  • Expectation of completing a four-year program leading to a degree.

  • Must be a graduate of one of the St. Paul public senior high schools. 

  • Scholarship used for tuition and fees, books, and supplies.

  • Eligibility for no more than two semesters of financial assistance.

Robert L. Carothers Distinguished Student Writers Award

Scholarship Amount: $500

Criteria:

  • A student does not apply for this scholarship, but instead Students United works with the universities to receive a nomination.

FAQ

All Students United scholarships open on February 1st. The application process closes on April 1st, except for the Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship, which is due on June 1st.

Advisory Board

Students United has an advisory board to its Board of Directors who aid in choosing scholarship recipients, supporting fundraising efforts, and sponsoring alumni events.
