We’ve consolidated information on all of Minnesota’s U.S. Representatives so students have one place where they can find their representatives’ contact information. The districts where our universities are located are highlighted below. United States Senate


The Senate is the upper chamber of the U.S. Congress and is composed of senators, each of whom represents a single state in its entirety. Each state, regardless of its population size, is equally represented by two senators who serve staggered terms of six years.

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar

Senator Klobuchar was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in the State of Minnesota when she was elected in 2006. Klobuchar graduated from Yale University and later attended the University of Chicago Law School. She partnered with two Minneapolis law firms before being elected Hennepin County attorney in 1998. She was reelected to a six-year term in 2016.

Committee Assignements

Judiciary Committee . . .

The Senate Judiciary Committee's jurisdiction covers issues such as criminal justice, consumer rights, intellectual property and antitrust law. Klobuchar serves as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, which is tasked with oversight of antitrust enforcement at the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission and monitoring the state of competition in a variety of industries to help protect consumers . The full Committee is also tasked with reviewing the President's nominees for federal judgeships - including Supreme Court justices - along with many Executive Branch nominations, and providing oversight of the Department of Justice, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

U.S. Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee . . .

Senator Klobuchar is the Chairwoman of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee. This Committee brings together senators, businesses, community leaders, policy experts and intergovernmental organizations to help develop policies to strengthen the economy and move the country forward.

Rules and Administration Committee . . .

Senator Klobuchar is the Chairwoman of the Rules Committee, which oversees the rules and operations of the Senate and has jurisdiction over the administration of federal elections and matters related to good governance.

Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee . . .

The Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee has responsibility for a wide range of issues important to businesses and consumers - overseeing everything from product safety to technology to transportation and the Coast Guard. The Commerce Committee's work helps keep consumers safe, strengthen the economy and cut red tape, and guide the future of our nation's transportation systems.

Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee . . .

The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry has jurisdiction over issues important to Minnesota, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture's farm, conservation, and rural-development programs; food stamps and nutrition; and forestry policy.

Joint Economic Committee . . .

The primary task of the Joint Economic Committee is to review economic conditions and to recommend improvements in economic policy.

U.S. Senator Tina Smith

Tina Smith worked in marketing before getting into politics in the ‘90s. Smith also worked for Planned Parenthood as the Vice President for External Affairs earlier in her career. She later served as chief of staff for Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, who would later choose her to run his 2010 gubernatorial campaign. She previously managed Ted Mondale’s gubernatorial campaign and former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale’s campaign for the U.S. Senate. When Rybak failed to earn the DFL endorsement, Smith joined former governor Mark Dayton’s team, and once he was elected, she served as his chief of staff prior to becoming his running mate for his reelection campaign. The first time she was elected to office was in 2011 when she became the 48th Lieutenant Governor. When former U.S. Senator Al Franken resigned, Smith was appointed to fill the vacancy by Governor Dayton. After winning a special election in 2018, Senator Smith was reelected to serve a six-year term in 2020.

Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs . . .

The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs is one of twenty Senate committees tasked with conducting Senate business related to specialized areas of legislative interest. Although the Senate has a longstanding history of writing and passing legislation focusing on our nation’s banks, the Senate Banking Committee was not formally established until 1913, with Senator Robert Owen of Oklahoma, sponsor of the landmark Federal Reserve Act, as its first Chairman; since then, the Committee has undergone various transformations and reorganizations. Now known as the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs to underscore the diversity of issues under its purview, the Committee plays an integral role in managing legislation that affects the lives of many Americans. These areas of jurisdiction include, but are not limited to: banking, insurance, financial markets, securities, housing, urban development and mass transit, international trade and finance, and economic policy.

Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions . . .

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions has jurisdiction over most of the agencies, institutes, and programs of the Department of Health and Human Services, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Administration on Aging, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry . . .

The Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry is a committee of the United States Senate empowered with legislative oversight of all matters relating to the nation's agriculture industry, farming programs, forestry and logging, and legislation relating to nutrition and health.

Indian Affairs . . .

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has jurisdiction to study the unique problems of American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native peoples and to propose legislation to alleviate these difficulties. These issues include, but are not limited to, Indian education, economic development, land management, trust responsibilities, health care, and claims against the United States. All legislation proposed by Members of the Senate that specifically pertains to American Indians, Native Hawaiians, or Alaska Natives is under the jurisdiction of the Committee.


United States House of Representatives


This branch of Congress is composed of representatives who sit in congressional districts allocated to each state on a basis of population as measured by the U.S. Census, with each district entitled to at least one representative. Members serve two-year terms and Minnesota currently has 8 representatives. We’re providing information for the districts where our universities are located.

Brad is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in Agriculture Education with emphasis in Rural Leadership Development. His prior positions include serving as Executive Director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association, Executive Director of the Center for Rural Policy & Development, Area Director with the Minnesota Farm Bureau, and three terms representing Brown, Watonwan, and Redwood counties in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

U.S. Rep. Angie Craig - 2nd District

Angie Craig was a full-time reporter for The Commercial Appeal, a daily newspaper in Memphis before moving to London in the early 2000s to work as a company executive working in communications and media relations for a medical device company. She moved to Minnesota to work at St. Jude Medical in their human resources and communications office, where she worked until 2017. After losing by a narrow margin in 2016, she decided to run again and won in 2018. In 2022, she was elected to serve her third term.

The committee has jurisdiction over agriculture, forestry, nutrition, water conservation, and other agriculture-related fields.

Energy and Commerce . . .

The committee maintains principal responsibility for legislative oversight relating to telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health, air quality and environmental health, the supply and delivery of energy, and interstate and foreign commerce.

U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips - 3rd District

Dean Phillips father was killed in the Vietnam War when he was six months old. His mother, DeeDee Cohen, later married Eddie Phillips, heir to the Phillips Distilling Company — a Minnesota-founded business that is still operating today. He attended college at Brown University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He worked for bicycle equipment and an apparel company for two years before joining the family business. He was named the president of Phillips Distilling after earning his MBA from the University of Minnesota in 2000. In 2018, he decided to run to represent Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District and was reelected to serve a third term in 2022.

Committee Assignments

Small Business . . .

The Small Business Committee has oversight and legislative jurisdiction over the Small Business Administration and its programs, as well as provides assistance to and protection of small business, including financial aid and the participation of small business enterprises in federal procurement and government contracts.

Foreign Affairs . . .

The Foreign Affairs Committee considers legislation that impacts the diplomatic community, which includes the Department of State, the Agency for International Development, the Peace Corps, the United Nations, and the enforcement of the Arms Export Control Act.

Ethics . . .

The Ethics Committee has three main functions. First, the office of Advice and Education is designated to answer questions and provide ethics training to House Members, officers, and employees. Contact with the Committee about the application of laws and rules to proposed conduct is welcomed and encouraged. The Committee’s advisory function is conducted in a confidential manner. The Committee rules prevent an Advice and Education inquiry from being transformed into an investigation. The second function of the Committee is investigations. The Committee is charged with investigating and adjudicating any alleged violations of the House rules or any related statutes by House Members, officers, or employees. The Committee’s third function is reviewing financial disclosure statements filed by Members, candidates, senior staff, and shared staff.

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum - 4th District

Betty McCollum has lived in the Twin Cities her entire life. After graduating from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, she worked as a high school social sciences teacher and a sales manager. She was first elected to public office in 1986, as the North St. Paul city council representative. In 1992 she was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives where she served four terms before being elected to Congress in 2000. She was reelected 2022 to serve her 12th term.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar - 5th District

Ilhan Omar began her career as a Community Nutrition Educator at the University of Minnesota. In 2012, she served as campaign manager for Kari Dziedzic's reelection campaign for the Minnesota State Senate. After that, she was a Child Nutrition Outreach Coordinator at the Minnesota Department of Education. She then managed Andrew Johnson's campaign for Minneapolis City Council in 2013. After Johnson was elected, she served as his Senior Policy Aide from 2013 to 2015 before becoming the Director of Policy Initiatives of the Women Organizing Women Network. She was first elected to office in 2016, representing District 60B in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She later ran for Congress in 2018 and when she was elected, she became the first Somali-American legislator in the U.S. She was reelected to serve her 3rd term in Congress in 2022.

Committee Assignments

Budget . . .

The Budget Committee's responsibility is to draft an annual concurrent resolution on the budget that provides a Congressional framework for spending and revenue levels, the federal surplus or deficit, and public debt. The budget resolution can contain reconciliation instructions directing authorizing committees to change laws in their jurisdiction to change revenues or mandatory spending levels. The resolution also can include mechanisms that aid in enforcing budget procedures in general or for particular purposes. In drafting the budget resolution, the Committee examines the President’s annual budget request, as well as economic and fiscal projections from the Congressional Budget Office. The Committee also has jurisdiction over budget process laws and tracks the budgetary effects of legislative action.

Education and Workforce . . .

The Committee on Education and Labor oversees federal programs and initiatives dealing with education at all levels—from preschool through high school to higher education and continuing education. The committee also holds jurisdiction over workforce initiatives aimed at strengthening health care, job training, and retirement security for workers.

U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer - 6th District

Tom Emmer began his legal career representing cities and counties through the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust and the League of Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust, handling lawsuits against police officers. He also represented volunteer firefighters and city and county inspectors, and handled a variety of land use issues. He first ran for Congress and won in 2004. He served three terms before unsuccessfully running for governor in 2010. He later reclaimed his Congressional seat in 2014 and was reelected in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022. He now serves as House Majority Whip.

This committee is tasked with overseeing all components of the nation’s housing and financial-services sectors, including banking, insurance and real estate. As the only Representative in the country to refuse campaign contributions from special-interest PACs, federal lobbyists and Members of Congress and their committees.

U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach - 7th District

Michelle Fischbach carries over 20 years of experience in the Minnesota Senate, including four as the President of the Senate.

In 1996, she was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in a special election.  In 2011, Michelle was the first woman in Minnesota history to serve as President of the Minnesota Senate. She also served as Chair of the Minnesota Senate Higher Education Committee, and most recently was the 49th Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, following former Lieutenant Governor and current Senator, Tina Smith’s appointment to the U.S. Senate.  

Rep. Fischbach is one of our alumni, having received a B.A. in Political Science from St. Cloud State University before earning a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law.

Agriculture . . .

This committee has jurisdiction over agriculture, forestry, nutrition, water conservation, and other agriculture-related fields.

Judiciary . . .

This committee oversees the administration of justice within the federal courts, administrative agencies and Federal law enforcement entities. The Judiciary Committee is also the committee responsible for impeachments of federal officials.

Rules . . .

This committee is responsible for the rules under which bills will be presented to the House of Representatives, unlike other committees, which often deal with a specific area of policy. The committee is often considered one of the most powerful committees as it influences the introduction and process of legislation through the House.

U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber - 8th District

Pete Stauber grew up in Duluth before attending Lake Superior State University, where he played hockey while earning his degree in Criminology. In 1990, Stauber signed a multi-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He later was chosen by the Florida Panthers in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft. He went on to serve on the Hermantown City Council for eight years before serving as a member of the St. Louis County Commission from 2013-2019. He was elected to Congress in 2018 and reelected to serve a third term in 2022.

Committee Assignments

Transportation and Infrastructure . . .

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has jurisdiction over all modes of transportation: aviation, maritime and waterborne transportation, highways, bridges, mass transit, and railroads. The Committee also has jurisdiction over other aspects of our national infrastructure, such as clean water and waste water management, the transport of resources by pipeline, flood damage reduction, the management of federally owned real estate and public buildings, the development of economically depressed rural and urban areas, disaster preparedness and response, and hazardous materials transportation.

Natural Resources

The House Committee on Natural Resources considers legislation about American energy production, mineral lands and mining, fisheries and wildlife, public lands, oceans, Native Americans, irrigation and reclamation.
