This year, to adapt to the pandemic, there will be a one-time change to the Penny Fellowships that are normally based in Washington D.C. As folks apply before the April 1st deadline, we wanted to give everyone an update.

In a normal year, without a global pandemic, Penny Fellowships take place either in Washington D.C. or within the state of Minnesota. Fellows in D.C. are awarded $5,000 and Fellows in Minnesota are awarded $2,500. These amounts are meant to help with internship costs, living expenses, and open options for internships if students aren’t being paid or must pay for credits.

This year, students have multiple options with fellowships. Throughout this year our goal has been to keep students as safe as possible. As vaccinations become more available, life may look very different for students as they pursue internships.

Penny Fellowships will need to be started between July 2021-June 2022. If students are awarded a Penny Fellowship in Minnesota, the award will remain $2,500. If students have a virtual internship based in Washington D.C. and stay in Minnesota, they will be awarded $2,500. If students physically interns in Washington D.C., they will be awarded the full $5,000.

Internships cannot be underway when the Penny Fellowship application is submitted. Internships must be approved by Students United and award winners work with the Director of Development to ensure the internship are eligible and within the field of public service.
